Professional Cutting Tool Regrinding in Indonesia

Save up to 70% on tooling costs without sacrificing performance — extend tool life, reduce procurement spend, and keep your production running.

Every year, Indonesian manufacturers throw away millions of rupiah in cutting tools that could be restored to near-original performance. Not because they want to — but because they don't know professional regrinding is available locally.

PT. Bless Berkarya Lestari changes that. We are one of the few cutting tool distributors in Indonesia that offers professional regrinding services alongside premium tool sales. This isn't "sharpening" with a bench grinder. This is precision regrinding with documented quality control.

1. What Is Professional Regrinding and How It Extends Tool Life

There's a world of difference between sharpening and professional regrinding.

  • Sharpening (what most local shops do): A bench grinder, eyeballing the angles, no measurement. Results: inconsistent geometry, altered cutting edge angles, reduced tool performance. Often worse than a worn tool.
  • Professional regrinding (what PT. Bless does): CNC tool grinder, programmed with original tool geometry, measured to microns. Results: restored cutting edges, consistent geometry, performance matching 85–95% of new tool.

A quality cutting tool (like Emuge Franken or any premium brand) has ground geometry optimized for specific materials and applications. Professional regrinding replicates that geometry exactly — not "close enough."

How Many Regrinds Per Tool? Most solid carbide end mills and drills can be reground 3–5 times before carbide length becomes too short. Each regrind restores 80–95% of original performance. A properly managed regrind program extends total tool life by 3–5x.

2. Cost Comparison: Regrinding vs Buying New (Real Numbers)

Let's do the math with real cutting tool prices in the Indonesian market.

Tool TypeNew Tool Price (Rp)Regrind Price (Rp)Savings per RegrindSavings %
Solid Carbide End Mill (6mm)180,000 – 350,00050,000 – 80,000130,000 – 270,000~70–75%
Solid Carbide Drill (8mm)150,000 – 300,00040,000 – 70,000110,000 – 230,000~70–75%

Indexable End Mill Body800,000 – 2,000,000150,000 – 300,000650,000 – 1,700,000~80–85%
PCD End Mill2,500,000 – 6,000,000400,000 – 800,0002,100,000 – 5,200,000~80–85%
Annual savings example (100 tools/month)Rp 60–120 million/year

We send 80–120 end mills for regrinding every month. That's Rp 6–9 million per month in regrind costs instead of Rp 20–30 million for new tools. The quality is consistent, and our machinists can't tell the difference between reground and new in most applications.

3. Which Tools Are Worth Regrinding — and Which Are Not

Not all cutting tools are good candidates for regrinding. Here's our professional recommendation.

✅ Worth Regrinding

  • Solid carbide end mills — square end, ball nose, corner radius
  • Solid carbide drills — jobber length, stub length, coolant-through
  • HSS and carbide taps — spiral point, spiral flute, forming taps (with care)
  • Indexable tool bodies — face mills, end mills, boring bars (body only)
  • PCD tools — excellent candidates, high new-tool cost makes regrinding very economical
  • Reamers — solid carbide reamers regrind well
  • Thread mills — single-tooth and multi-tooth thread mills

❌ NOT Worth Regrinding

  • Cheap tools (under Rp 50,000 new) — regrinding cost exceeds tool value
  • Badly chipped or broken tools — missing teeth or major edge damage cannot be restored
  • Coated tools where coating is critical — TiAlN and AlTiN coatings cannot be reapplied locally (we regrind the geometry; you accept lower coating performance)
  • Form tools / special profiles — requires custom grinding program, usually not economical
  • Tools that have been reground 4+ times — diminishing returns, risk of carbide failure
  • Carbide burrs / rotary files — complex geometries, low new-tool cost
⚠️ Important Note on Coated Tools
Regrinding removes the original coating (TiAlN, AlTiN, etc.). After regrinding, the cutting edge is uncoated carbide. This is acceptable for many applications (aluminum, mild steel, general machining). For abrasive materials or high-heat applications, performance will be reduced. We recommend regrinding for roughing or semi-finishing, not for finishing passes in hard materials.

4. PT. Bless Regrinding Process: Quality Assurance Steps

We don't guess. Every tool follows a documented quality process.

1

Inspection & Sorting

Technicians inspect each tool for damage. Tools with major chipping or broken teeth are rejected. Others sorted by type and geometry.

2

Cleaning

Ultrasonic cleaning removes residue, coolant, and embedded chips from the tool surface.

3

CNC Regrinding

5-axis CNC tool grinder programmed with original geometry specifications. All flutes reground equally to maintain balance.

4

Edge Preparation

Optional edge honing / micro-bevel applied for improved edge strength in tough applications.

5

Inspection

Every tool inspected: diameter, flute length, point angle, runout. Measurement report available on request.

6

Marking & Return

Tools marked with regrind count. Packaged and returned to your facility with inspection documentation.

Quality Guarantee

  • Diameter tolerance: ±0.01 mm (standard), ±0.005 mm (precision upon request)
  • Runout: ≤0.005 mm at tool tip
  • Edge geometry: Replicated from original tool specification
  • Documentation: Inspection report included for every batch
Quality Assurance If a reground tool fails to meet our published tolerances, we regrind it again at no charge. If it fails catastrophically due to regrind quality (not material or application issue), we replace the tool value. This is our commitment.
